As its name suggests, yellow beeplant is extremely beneficial to honeybees. That is why it is commonly planted in beekeepers’ yards and gardens. Beyond bees, the flower is also beneficial to ants, butterflies, beetles, and other pollinators. It is a native annual that can grow up to 48 inches tall. Similar to the Rocky Mountain beeplant, yellow beeplant grows atop a tall stem that grows small, elliptical leaflets and flowers with a fuzzy appearance. It produces very visible pods that contain rough rounded seeds, which allow the plant to reseed itself year over year. Compared to its cousin, the Rocky Mountain beeplant, yellow beeplant is a bit shorter and produces yellow and orange flowers. It has low water requirements and prefers full sun. Typically blooms in the spring or summer.
Scientific Name: Cleome lutea
