Rose mallow, also known as woolly rose mallow or false cotton, is a rare and endangered native perennial herb that grows in every region of California, primarily in the Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley regions. It can be found in marshes, wetlands, floodplains, ditches, streams, and along rivers. Rose mallow is a hardy winter deciduous plant that can withstand temperatures as low as 20° F. Songbirds enjoy the seeds and many pollinators use rose mallow as their host plant. Rose mallow can tolerate shade but prefers access to full sun. It can also tolerate summer heat and humidity very well but does require moist soil.
