Red maids, also known as red sand-verbena and red ribbons, is an annual herb. Red maids are native to western North America, particularly regions of California, Oregon, New Mexico, and Baja California; growing in deserts and coastal habitats. They have succulent leaves and produce vibrant five-petaled pink and magenta flowers that bloom from February through July. Red maids are well adapted to arid conditions and are known for their ability to withstand drought. Its low-growing habit forms dense mats, stabilizing sandy soils. The clustered blooms attract bees and butterflies, contributing to local ecosystems.
