Blue-eyed grass is a delicate species of flowering plant native to the western United States. It is a perennial herb named after its small, blue, iris-like flowers. It is known for its ability to easily establish and to reseed. In California, blue-eyed grass typically blooms from January to July, prefers moisture and good drainage, and can tolerate summer dryness. It is moderately hardy and will tolerate temperatures as low as 20 degrees. It is often found in meadows, open woodlands, and along roadsides at altitudes up to almost 8,000 feet. Blue-eyed grass is attractive to pollinators, and it is a popular choice for gardeners looking to add a touch of delicate blue to their gardens. Especially beneficial in wildflower mixes to add a nice variety of colors and leaf texture. In California, Blue-eyed grass is listed on several fire resistant plant lists, including FireSafe Marin and County of San Diego.
